Jewel Henry Arthur Callis is the great, great uncle of Alpha Rho’s own Wesley Langston Palmer Curl who was initiated at Morehouse College in Spring 1980. These heirloom family images have never been published outside of this blog and depict Jewel Callis as a young 1904 undergrad at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York.

One of seven Founders (7 Jewels) of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Dr. Henry Arthur Callis was born in Rochester, New York and attended Cornell University and Rush Medical College. He became a physician and worked as a medical consultant at the Veterans' Hospital in Tuskegee, Alabama. He was Professor of Medicine at Howard University and a frequent contributor to medical journals. Callis died on November 12, 1974 in Washington, D.C.. His death was a milestone for the fraternity as Callis became the last Jewel to enter its Omega Chapter.
