Alpha Rho Acquires Historic Personal Alpha Phi Alpha Library Of Morehouse College President Bro. John Hope And His Grandson Bro. Richard O. Hope (Fall 1958) For Chapter Archives At AUC Robert W. Woodruff Library
By BMaynard Scarborough, (Fall 1980/APID No. 815)
APCAA President & AP Digest Executive Editor
The Hope Family legacy in Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., and specifically in Alpha Rho Chapter seated at Morehouse College, is storied, with beginnings in Fall 1928 when the 5th president of Morehouse College Dr. John Hope was initiated into the Alpha Zeta Chapter at then West Virginia Collegiate Institute.
In later years President Hope’s son, John Hope II (Fall 1930/APID No. 68) would join the fraternity at Morehouse, serve as chapter president, and witness both his sons John III (Fall 1955/APID No. 353) and Richard (Fall 1958/APID No. 428) pledge there as well. President Hope’s eldest son Edward Swain Hope would precede him in joining the fraternity by pledging Alpha at Sigma Chapter in Fall 1925 while studying at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
When Bro. Richard Oliver Hope passed on December 1, 2023, he was the last in this immediate line of family fraternity members, and many of the artifacts from the lives of these five Hope men were left in the safe-keeping of Mrs. Alice Anderson Hope, his widow. Following a few years of acquaintance, Mrs. Hope assigned perpetual care of these family artifacts to the Alpha Rho Chapter Alumni Association (APCAA) and they will be secured in the chapter’s archives at the AUC Robert W. Woodruff Library and Research Center in Atlanta, Georgia.
Bro. Earl N. Caldwell II, Fall 1982 (APID No. 847) first me Bro. Richard Hope in 2004. Caldwell led the acquisition and is pictured in the top banner image with Mrs. Alice Hope on Monday April 29, 2025 in Chicago, Illinois.
The collection includes President Hope’s ceremonial regalia from Morehouse College and Brown University (1894), and Bro. Richard Hope’s Alpha shingle, pledge picture, ceremonial paddle, and line “letter” from Fall 1958 when he crossed. The full collection will be completed by homecoming 2025 and will include several additional artifacts from President Hope, his sons John Hope II and Edward Swain Hope, and grandsons John Hope III and Richard.

Transcendent 12 (Spring 2005) Celebrates 20th Anniversary With $20,000 Donation To APCAA's Scholarship Fund

Historic donation is the first group contribution made exclusively for Alpha Rho Chapter undergrad scholars
By BMaynard Scarborough, (Fall 1980/APID No. 815)
APCAA President & AP Digest Executive Editor
The Transcendent 12, comprised of passionate and driven individuals, wanted to honor the rich legacy of the Alpha Rho Chapter. They recognized that the fraternity had played a crucial role in shaping their lives, providing them with invaluable experiences, friendships, and leadership opportunities. As they approached their 20th anniversary, they felt a strong desire to give back to the organization that had given them so much.
In the spring of 2025 the T-12 made a historic scholarship donation of $20,000 to the Alpha Rho Chapter Alumni Association (APCAA), designated to support last-mile scholarships for current undergraduate members of the Alpha Rho Chapter. These scholarships are intended to alleviate the financial burdens faced by students who were nearing graduation but required additional support to complete their education. The T-12 believed that no student should have to forgo their dreams due to financial constraints, and they hoped that this gift would empower their successors to achieve their academic goals.
Hopefully, the Transcendent 12’s transformative gift will not stop with their own contribution. They aim to inspire other anniversary lines within the chapter to consider similar philanthropic efforts. By combining celebratory milestones with acts of generosity, they envisioned a culture of giving that would strengthen the fraternity’s commitment to education and community service.
The scholarship fund established by the T-12 will most certainly become a cornerstone of the Alpha Rho Chapter’s alumni giving to Morehouse College. It not only provides crucial financial assistance to deserving students but will also foster a sense of unity and purpose among chapter members.

NEW!!! APCAA Updates 2nd Century Brand With Signature ChapBadges (Lapel Pins) In Two Styles + Engraved APID Numbers

APCAA Staff
“The 2025 Alpha Rho Chapter brand update is a movement to emphasize the sacred bond unique to Morehouse Men who are also Men of Alpha.”
At the heart of Alpha Rho's 2nd Century brand update is the introduction of our exclusive APCAA "ChapBadge," or individually issued limited-edition lapel pin, which features the new brandmark "Alpha Rho / True Forever," and includes each Chapter member's engraved APID No.
Beginning with the launch of the 2nd Century Scholarship Campaign in mid-May 2025, brothers will be able to select the metal composition and style (classic or epic) for their hand-crafted ChapBadge. “The Alpha Rho ChapBadge is more than a keepsake — it’s a rich physical representation of our lifelong commitment to each other, to Alpha, to our Chapter, and to Morehouse College,” said Bro. BMaynard Scarborough (Fall 1980/APID No. 815), President of APCAA. “Every badge will tell a story. Every APID number honors a brother’s unique place in our 101-year legacy.”
About the new APID No. Registry:
APCAA has established a unique-digit inventory (APID No.) which designates the exact order in which each of the chapter’s 1,448 initiates entered the “House of Alpha Rho.” The registry was designed in-part to circumvent instances of accidental or intentional misrepresentation of Alpha Rho initiation in data and in-person. Numbers have been registered for all initiates, living or in Omega Chapter, and a special classification has been made for honorary badges for Brothers who transferred into the chapter (and served) following undergrad initiation elsewhere. These limited issues with feature the engraving: T/APID.
“As we step into our next 100 years, we are committed to strengthening the bridge between undergraduate and alumni brothers, preserving our legacy, and inspiring the next generation of leaders,” added Scarborough. “This new brandmark speaks loudly and reaffirms the transformative power of our brotherhood that begins on Brown Street … and lives wherever Alpha Men tread.”
Principle in the development of the ChapBadge has been APCAA’s founding treasurer Bro. Sean Michael Moss (Fall 1980/APID No. 811).
The Aura Of The Morehouse College Tiger Sharks Returns To The Archer Hall Pool

APCAA Staff
Bro. Geordan Colden’s Drip No Drown Swimming Program has partnered with Morehouse College athletics to bring the splash back to the Archer Hall pool with a series of instructional training sessions for AUC students and faculty. This same facility was once the aquatic home of the college’s legendary Morehouse College Tiger Sharks swim team, a dominant force in collegiate swimming from 1958 to 1976.
Founded by Dr. James "Pinky" Haines, the team achieved an impressive record of 255 wins against only 25 losses, securing 13 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) championships during their 18-year tenure.
Under his leadership, the Tiger Sharks not only dominated their conference but also gained national attention, with features in publications like Ebony and Jet magazines. The team's success was also evident in their performances against non-HBCU institutions. They recorded victories over schools such as Emory and Georgia Tech, further establishing their prowess in the pool.
Despite their achievements, the program was discontinued in 1976 during the presidency of Hugh Morris Gloster. However, efforts have been made to revive the Tiger Sharks' legacy. In addition to the evolution of Bro. Colden’s DND program, recent years have seen the college host events like the HBCU Celebration Swim Meet, aiming to honor the history of Black swimmers and promote aquatic sports within historically Black colleges and universities.
DND founder and lead swim instructor Geordan Colden hails from Richmond, VA, with a competitive swimming background spanning 10 years. A Morehouse College Kinesiology graduate (2021), he serves as a City of Atlanta Firefighter and holds certifications as an Advanced EMT, Water Safety Instructor, Swift Water Rescue Specialist, Lifeguard, and CPR/First Aid provider.

Sports Illustrated Asked: Who Is The 2024-2025 Florida High School Boys Basketball Class 2A Coach Of The Year?

By Ross Van De Griek www.si.com
High School on SI nominated 10 coaches who they think will be the player of the year in their respective classifications ... and the winner in Florida Class 2A is Coach Tarrik D. Mabon of The First Academy (Orlando) Royals. In his first season with the The Royals, Mabon finished with a 18-9 record which was the program's most wins in a season since 2018 (17).
Said Mabon: "Nothing without GOD's grace and mercy. I was voted Florida Class 2A Coach of the Year via "highschoolonsi.com."It's always a great feeling to be recognized and supported. However, there is freedom in knowing that it's not me. For whatever reason, GOD has allowed me to work through many mistakes in my lifetime, to do what I absolutely love to do. Bro. Tommy R. Lampley Stages 2025 Father's Day Launch Of "24 Letters To My Sons"

APCAA Staff
Said Lampley: "This book is more than words on a page — it’s a bridge between generations. A reflection of the wisdom, strength, and resilience passed down from my grandfather to my father, from my father to me, and now from me to my sons.
In 2024, I lost my father. His passing ignited this journey — writing letters that will live on beyond my own lifetime, just as his legacy lives within me. To my father, who held me as a baby, and to my son, who stands beside me now — this is for you. And to the ancestors who laid the foundation, your legacy lives on.
The number 24 represents more than a title — it’s a symbol of greatness, perseverance, and the responsibility we carry to uplift the next generation.
This Father’s Day 2025, we honor not just fathers, but the lessons, sacrifices, and love they leave behind."
Architectural Digest Magazine Reports: Affordable Housing In America Through Three People’s Eyes

By Abigail Glascow www.architecturaldigest.com
[Terrick Gutierrez is an LA-based interdisciplinary artist whose work explores urban life in LA through the lens of the rapidly changing built environment, such as liquor stores and public housing projects]
I grew up in South Central LA on governmental assistance, and we moved around because of housing insecurity. By the time I graduated high school, I had moved five times — all of these places were within a few miles of each other. It was me, my mom, my three sisters, and one of my brothers. You have to move where Section 8 vouchers are approved and you can afford the limit.
As a kid, I knew we were on Section 8. It wasn’t until I got older that my mom started explaining some of what happened, like that we had to move because of a landlord who wouldn’t repair our toilet that used to overflow. My mom hated moving because it was costly. I think one of the reasons these places were substandard is because sometimes the landlords just cared about getting paid. Section 8 was guaranteed for them, and there weren’t incentives to renovate.
Until I was three or four, we lived in a back house with an alley entrance. The landlord lived in the other house on the lot and was a pastor. We would go to her church every Sunday. It was actually this landlord that helped my mom apply for Section 8 housing. After that, we moved to a very small unit, our first on Section 8, with an unresponsive landlord. We had plumbing issues, and the sewage from the toilet came out and flooded the entire house, which soaked into the carpet. He knew my mom was an immigrant and he would take advantage of that, assuming she didn’t know our rights.

Terrick Gutierrez (b. 1994) is an LA-based interdisciplinary artist, creative technologist, activist, researcher, and curator who grew up in South Central. He is a child of Belizean and Mexican immigrants and his work explores urban life in LA through the lens of the rapidly changing built environment such as liquor stores and public housing projects. "Almost two years after speaking to him on a Zoom call, I finally got a chance to meet Bro. Herman Edward Gregory, Fall 1946, our oldest living AP Brother at 98 years old, in person. He’ll be 99 on June 7.
I gifted him our centennial history book and got to hear more about his story going from being a Sphinxman at Kappa chapter to transferring to Morehouse. He ran track at Ohio State and was trying to break Jesse Owens’s 100m record. 'I took two steps to his one.'
As we flipped through his era in the lineage, he said 'Hey, I recognize this fella' several times. His LB Noah Wills (the first of three generations of AP Brothers), Horace Ward, Sam McKinney, and Maynard Jackson were among those he pointed out.
And it was touching to show him this picture (he’s at the bottom left, kneeling next to the sign) and then the names of his LBs in the lineage section. As soon as he saw this, he shouted, 'My boy Eddie Jones!' Eddie Jones (bottom right, kneeling next to the sign) was his roommate, close friend, and line brother."

"The Burden Of Proof: The Unintended Impact Of DEI On Talented Black And Brown Students"

In today's climate, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) has been unfairly misconstrued as a system that provides undeserved advantages to Black and Brown individuals rather than its true purpose — creating opportunities for qualified women, veterans, underrepresented minorities, the LGBTQ community and people with disabilities who have historically been excluded from certain spaces.
As a result, talented Black and Brown students now face an unfair burden: the need to constantly prove they belong. This was our daughter Corinne’s experience, which began when a white classmate casually remarked, out of "innocent ignorance," that her father had told her: "I need to do better than you in school, so you don’t take my spot at the University of Michigan."
Corinne's Academic Excellence:
For context, Corinne has always been an exceptional student. She scored a 27 on the ACT — in seventh grade. She earned a perfect score on the entrance exam for one of Chicago Public Schools' most selective and prestigious academic programs — Whitney Young Magnet School's Academic Center. Coming from a family of educators, she has always understood that "education is the passport to the future." Yet, her classmate’s comment lingered. When she asked us, “What does she mean by saying I would take her spot?” we knew this was a moment that required an honest conversation.

Planned Parenthood's Bro. George B. Walker Joins Congressional Leaders In Stand-Up Outside SCOTUS During Oral Arguments
On April 2, 2025, Planned Parenthood led a significant protest outside the U.S. Supreme Court during oral arguments in the case Medina v. Planned Parenthood South Atlantic. The case centers on South Carolina's 2018 executive order to block Medicaid reimbursements to clinics that provide abortions, effectively targeting Planned Parenthood. The Supreme Court's decision could have nationwide implications affecting millions of Medicaid enrollees, potentially limiting access to essential services like contraception and cancer screenings, particularly in underserved areas.
Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley (MA-07), Co-Chair of the Reproductive Freedom Caucus, joined the rally to support Medicaid patients — especially Black, brown, Indigenous, disabled, and queer individuals — who are most at risk of losing access to essential health care services. She emphasized that the attacks on health care, basic freedoms, and bodily autonomy are interconnected and that denying Medicaid patients the right to choose their health care provider would further entrench disparities in health care.
The rally was part of a broader mobilization by Planned Parenthood and allied organizations to defend Medicaid patients' rights and access to reproductive health care services. The Supreme Court's forthcoming ruling could significantly impact Medicaid access and draw national implications on healthcare provider qualifications.
Said Walker: "What a day. Standing in front of SCOTUS with the background noise of those trying to dismantle so many of the benefits that allow people to live humanely, is sobering. I got into some good trouble, knowing that while the risks are not the same as my elders, nonetheless it matters that we use our voices in this moment."
