Legacy Legends Of Alpha Rho Join Omega Chapter In Early Months Of 2018


Alpha Rho lost two legends in the early months of 2018 -- Brothers Edgar Smith, Sr. (Fall 1950) and Samuel Tucker (Spring 1951).

Edgar L. Smith, Sr., DVM West Bloomfield - on December 2, 2017 at age 93. Devoted husband to the late Pauline Jackson Smith. Beloved Father of Edgar L. Smith, Jr. (Toni) and Eric J. Smith. Dear brother to Bertha LaVerne Creath and Charles Henry Smith, both of Dermott, AR. Uncle to a host of nieces and nephews. Beloved friend and colleague to many. Dr. Smith was a historic Veterinarian and 2012 Congressional Gold Medal Honoree for being one of the 51st Defense Battalion (Montford Point Marines) in the U.S. Marine Corps, its first African American fighting unit during WWII. He was a graduate of Morehouse College (BS, 1952) and the Tuskegee University School of Veterinary Medicine (DVM, 1959). He was employed as a Veterinary Medical Officer for more than forty years with the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), overseeing meat inspection in Michigan and Ohio. He was also a private practice Veterinarian at the Fuller Veterinary Clinic and Hurley Dog and Cat Hospital. Dr. Smith was also an instructor/educator and entrepreneur. Visitation Friday 4-8 PM at Swanson Funeral Home, 14751 W. McNichols. Funeral Service Saturday 12:30-1:30 PM from the Funeral Home. Internment at Mt. Hope Memorial Gardens in Livonia. Dr. Smith's son, Edgar L. Smith, Jr., was initiated into Alpha Rho Chapter in Fall 1950.

Dr. Samuel Tucker -- Celebration of Life Service for Dr. Samuel Tucker will be held Friday, February 9, 2018 at 12:00 Noon at Jackson Memorial Baptist Church, 534 Fairburn Rd NW, Atlanta, GA 30331. Rev. Dr. Gregory A. Sutton, pastor. His body will lie instate at 10:00 AM. Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

Ceremony starting at 11 AM. Family and friends please assemble at the church at 11:30 AM on the day of service. Interment Westview Cemetery. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Arlene and beloved son, Samuel Jr. He is survived by his 3 children, Sabrina Tucker Hall (Michael deceased), Sterling Jeh Tucker (Danuelle), and Sharon Belhamel (Mohammed); 5 grandchildren, Michael Hall, Marcus Hall, Sterling Tucker, Jr, Shawn Tucker and Steven Tucker; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.

Dr. Tucker's Grandson, Michael Tucker Hall, was initiated into Alpha Rho in Spring 2017.
