Vintage Photo Of Alpha Rho Charter Members As Sphinxmen in 1923 Featured In Morehouse College's
An exquisite 231-page photo book released by Morehouse College in 2018 features a previously unidentified group image of ten charter members of Alpha Rho Chapter from 1923. It's believed that the image was unearthed in the archives of the Kenan Research Center at the Atlanta History Center.
The recent historical find is pictured below. The more familiar group image from 1924, is pictured at bottom. Further research revealed that the earlier image was taken prior to the Charter Member's initiation into the fraternity.
Even though the photo features the caption "Young men of Morehouse in the mid-20th century," sharp-eyed Alpha Rho members immediately recognized the subjects as identical to the frequently referenced charter member image that is universal to our founding. Also coincidental is the placement of Charter Member Cassander Woodliff Sellers centermost in both images, as he served as the first president of the chapter in 1924. His signature center hair part is unmistakeable in both images. This historical gem can be found on page 48 of the new publication.
