Gordon Lane Joyner has been selected for positions of governmental leadership by two presidents of the United States, five governors of Georgia, and two mayors of Atlanta. The voters of Fulton County, Georgia, elected Joyner four times to the Fulton County Board of Commissioners (including at-large countywide), and he also served as an associate in the home office in Atlanta of the international corporate law firm, Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton LLP, as assistant director of the American Bar Association’s Governmental Relations Office in Washington, D.C., as Director of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s headquarters Office of Fair Housing Enforcement in Washington, D.C., as a judge for the City of Atlanta, and for a record 11 years as executive director and administrator of the State of Georgia Civil Rights Department (Georgia Commission on Equal Opportunity).

Fulton County named a bridge in downtown Atlanta “in honor and recognition of Commissioner Gordon L. Joyner for outstanding public service,” and the student lounge in the Morehouse College Walter E. Massey Leadership Center building also bears his name.

Joyner is a salutatorian, summa cum laude, and Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Morehouse College (with double majors and double minors), and he received his Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School, where he was selected by the faculty for distinguished appointment to the HLS Board of Student Advisers. Joyner is the father of Ashley L. T. Joyner, Esq., an attorney in Washington, D.C., and Shannon K.T. Joyner, an MBA graduate from Harvard Business School and also a salutatorian, summa cum laude, and Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Morehouse College.
